D's birthday fail

We make birthdays in this house fun. But once in a blue moon things don’t turn out the way you plan.

D has been so excited for his birthday. We talked about all the fun things we could do. We settled on sledding but the weather did not cooperate. So… we improvised. We decided to take the kids ice blocking. We bought blocks of ice and took them to Sugar House Park. We did not count on a fast moving snowstorm followed by the weather warming to almost 50. We knew there would be some snow on the ground but figured it would be melted by the time we got there.

What we learned is that when people go sledding with very little snow, you get lots of mud. We also learned that snow and ice stick together creating a bond so powerful you go nowhere. We also learned that ice blocking in mud is… muddy.

So… We decided to get treats at Carol's Pastry Shop, a bakery that had been threatened with closure due to COVID-19. We (and hundreds of others) decided to go support them. Steve was in line for one hour. Normally we would have gone somewhere else, but the kids were so excited to try these treats that they would not be deterred. By the time we made it home everyone was wiped out and frustrated.

Moral of the story… You win some, you lose some, and some make good stories for family lore.

Realizing we may have a problem.

J discovered more success sliding with coats vs ice blocks.

M kept going.

D tried to make the best of the situation.

C finally gave up and laid despondent on the ice/snow/mud and begged to leave.

One hour wait for Steve to buy whatever they had left.
While everything was good, the eclairs were delicious.

Later in the day C found his zen.
I don't know where he comes up with this stuff.
