Inauguration day

Today is inauguration day and we have been anxious in the weeks leading up to it. We have been concerned there will be more violence, more hatred, more fear.

But today’s presidential inauguration was beautiful. It was calming. It was peaceful. Perhaps it was made more poignant by the startling reminders (masked, armed guards, barbed wire barricades, empty streets) that we are in a pandemic and under attack by our very own people.

Steve and I spent much of the ceremony choked up and emotional. There were so many beautiful moments. We both felt immense relief and gratitude when Joe Biden was sworn in. Steve's favorite part was the feeling of compassion. President Biden's speech addressing a deeply divided nation and calling for unity was balm to our souls. One of my favorite moments was Amanda Gorman's poem. It was absolutely breathtaking. Seeing Kamala Harris sworn in was particularly emotional for me. And the music? The music was perfect. We feel like we can breathe again for the first time in years.
