Wheat update 2020

It was time for J's annual wheat appointment. We changed doctors this year and this one believed the skin test and lab results supported a wheat challenge! The whole family was excited, but as the appointment neared I became anxious and nauseous. The doctor planned to give my baby the very food that we have protected him from for eight and half years.

For reference: this is what an allergen skin test looks like. They lightly prick the skin with a positive and negative control and with individual allergens. The goal would be that only the positive control would be red with hives.

But this is what it looks like in 15 minutes if you are allergic to any of the allergens. J hates these tests because they are incredibly itchy and it is hard to stay still while the allergens react. The surprising news is that his wheat was small enough to challenge. Clearly there are other things we are working on with J.

J and I were at the doctor's office (with masks on!) for three hours watching Cars while they gave him increasing doses of wheat. When they gave him the first bite of a saltine cracker I reflexively shifted to knock it away from his mouth. Thankfully I stopped myself before I made things uncomfortable. It was weird watching him eat wheat. But the doctor was right...he was ready for the challenge. He did not have any reaction. None. Nada. Nothing. It was absolutely perfect.

With mask.

Sans mask.

He took this selfie right after he called Dad on the way home. You can't tell but J was in a really good mood.

Now he has a little wheat each day and we increase the amount every two weeks. At this point he has tried and liked:

Cinnamon rolls

Pizza

Mac and cheese

Pie

Pancakes

So far? Sill no reaction. This is incredible and we are cautiously optimistic. What if he could eat wheat?
