Lunch and elementary end party

Recently Steve and I realized we could go on lunch dates while the kids are in school. Today we met at the Cheesecake Factory to use a gift card my Mom and her Husband gave Steve for his birthday. (Thank you!) We had a nice time chatting, eating, and watching C lick lemons.

And frankly I needed to bring as much zen as possible in my life since tonight we invited every girl in M's 6th grade class (plus a few more) to our house to celebrate the end of elementary school. My actions were not that of a "cool" mom, rather the actions of a mom who is totally freaking out and wants to know who she is going to middle school with. It started a few weeks ago when M was invited to a party and one of the party goers ruined the good-time vibes by being moody, playing on her phone, isolating herself, and then at the end of the night, telling the birthday girl (in front of everyone) that it was the worst, most boring party she had ever gone to. M came home shaken and once she finally spilled what happened, cried for a half hour. At one point she said "(Friend) just wants to grow up and we just want to be kids." Sooooo...we are in new territory. Mean girl territory.

Clearly I needed intel. Hence the party.

M and I spent weeks planning. We would have a taco bar dinner (to accommodate friend food allergies and preferences) with music blaring from the computer in the kitchen. They would eat outside. They would watch a movie (National Treasure) while painting their nails and/or making beaded friendship bracelets while noshing on snacks. Then they would make s'mores over the fire pit.

It ended up being a success. There were tons of girls, lots of shrieks and giggles, M won points for being a "cool" kid with a "cool" family. And I got to meet the girl who ruined the last party and glean info to help M the next time their paths cross. I also got to meet all the other really sweet girls who are genuinely kind and nice. Win-win-win.

The only pic of the night after some girls had already left.
