My heart aches around C's birthday, but being able to serve dinner to families in the Ronald McDonald Family Room at Primary Children's Hospital brings both Steve and me peace. This year we, with our amazing friends, smoothly served about 60 people and had plenty of leftovers.
In an especially poignant twist, our friends who helped last year, have a child who is a patient this year so we were able to serve them. Their child has a long road ahead and they are struggling with all the thoughts and emotions that accompany an uncertain future. One of the best moments from the night was when everyone had left and our group laughed and talked for an hour. Our friends told us later that was exactly what they needed - just to feel normal again.
