Not on your team

J has been on a roll lately. I made a dinner he didn't like and wouldn't eat. (The policy in our home is you do not have to eat dinner, but you can't have anything else either. The kids know this and so there are no tears or power struggles. Plus I am a fabulous cook so this isn't an issue very often. But I digress...) It was bedtime. He told me he was hungry and I told him he could have chosen to eat dinner. At this point, he gives me this serious look, puts his hand on my shoulder and tells me, "Mom, I am not on your team, but I still love you". I burst out laughing. Who is this kid? The fact that he would lay down a boundary, but make sure I knew he still loved me. That is social work 101. Apparently he is listening to me after all.
