With J's allergy to wheat he has missed out on simple things we all take for granted.
My heart breaks a little each time he sees something being eaten that
looks amazing and he asks if it has wheat and I have to tell him it
does. He puts on a brave face, but a little light goes out in his eyes. On the other hand, you have never seen such joy when he is told
there is no wheat in whatever is being eaten and he can have some. He
claps his hands, jumps up and down and throws his arms around me in a
spontaneous hug.
Baked goods are particularly challenging and we have tried countless bakeries. His personal favorite and the baker that gives him the most joy (and we have traveled all over Utah searching) is.....Eleanor's Bake Shop in Sandy. It is a dedicated wheat free bakery that is the epitome of a dive, but their bread, cupcakes and brownies sing to his heart and soul. They serve other things like soups and sandwiches and their chicken coconut curry is out of this world. It is the only time I can completely relax when we eat out. Anytime we go anywhere else I work myself into a panicked frenzy monitoring his every bite because even though I have grilled the cooks and servers about their ingredients and cooking practices there is always the risk of death. Needless to say we rarely eat out.
Well, recently Eleanor's debuted their new pizza crust and I nearly cried when J got to have his first bite of real pizza. He kept asking if it was really for him. He was in heaven.
If you haven't been to Eleanor's you should try it out. They are a small family owned business and we need them to stay open for many years to come. Another incredible story about them...When we had to take J off a ton of food last year I was devastated and called them to see if they offered anything wheat, dairy and egg free. Turns out they make a sourdough bread that is not on their menu and was exactly what we needed. They offered to add us to the few they made it for and J loved every bite. I appreciated that they took the time to offer a solution when things seemed especially bleak. Eleanor's Bake Shop you are amazing and we love you!
