Sleep apnea solution

Life with J has been intense. For example, every night for the last three years he has woken the entire household two to four times a night with screams that could wake the dead. I'm telling you, it's been intense. Steve and I have literally tried everything to help J combat the sleepless nights and the exhausted days, but to no avail. It all came to a head a few months ago when I was visiting a sleeping patient and watched them stop breathing, jerk, and gasp for air and thought, "That looks like J". I started putting the pieces together like the non sleep thing and the fact that we can hear him snore through a closed door and I questioned whether we were dealing with sleep apnea. We took him to an ENT on Friday who discovered his adenoids were 100% obstructing his airway and on Tuesday we had him in same day surgery.

J was attached to Steve. He only wanted Daddy.

He only wanted Mommy when he was coming out of anesthesia.

The ENT told us afterward that removing the adenoids opened his airway 3/4ths of an inch on all sides. We learned that prior to surgery older children who have large adenoids report having dreams of being smothered and dying. It is likely that is why J was inconsolable during the night. Sorry bud!  Another fun fact-individuals with food allergies have large adenoids and tonsils and his may grow back. Yeah!

We were concerned how J would be post surgery. We needn't have worried. These are the photos taken within 30 minutes of arriving home and giving him a wheat free chocolate muffin to celebrate his bravery.

Here is the huge news. He is sleeping through the night so he is pleasant during the day. And did I mention he is sleeping through the night? For the third time in case you missed it, J is SLEEPING through the night. It is absolute heaven.
